King of Clubs

Sunday, August 8th, 2010 by Events @ CUKC
September 4, 2010toSeptember 5, 2010

Registration for this event is now open.

King of the Clubs is back! Last year 5 clubs and over 100 paddlers met at River Run for the first ever King of Clubs event. After several on and off water events, Guelph Kayak Club was victorious. GKC got crowned ‘King of the Clubs 2009’, and received the coveted trophy, a wooden kayak paddle with their club name engraved on it! Who will be King of the Clubs this year? Will it be your club? All paddling clubs are welcome to compete on Sunday September 5th 2010 at the Ottawa River. This will be a fun day of events for everyone so get involved!

CARDBOARD BOAT BUILDING: Saturday Sept 4th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm – collect cardboard and duct tape for Cardboard Boat Race (ONLY supplied material can be used).

GENERAL MEETING: Saturday Sept 4th at 8:00pm: Paddler’s Meadow, River Run – review Events, hand out event descriptions, hand out/collect WO Waivers and Attendance Sheets from clubs.

FINAL MEETING: Sunday Sept 5th at 8:00 am: Review Events and hand out/collect Waivers and Attendance Sheets.

Note: Club’s need to shuttle in time to be on the water by 9:00 am, since the first club needs to be in place in the eddies when the Relay starts at 10:00 am below McCoy’s. Cardboard boats should be dropped off at the Lorne put-in.

Water Events

McCoy Rapid Relay 10am – Start at bottom of McCoy’s at the beach near Rightside Horseshoe. In this event 5 paddlers will relay race down McCoy’s rapid. Points will be awarded based on time.

Lorne Cardboard Boat Race 12:30-1pm – Start at Owl put-in at the Lorne. One paddler from each club will paddle their cardboard boat down the Lorne rapid towards the WT lunch spot. It will be a boater-cross style race with the maximum amount of boaters being the number of clubs attending King of the Clubs, one boat per club. Transportation of the cardboard boats and the waste will be completed after the event is done.

Boater-Cross 2-2:30pm– This event will take place above Normans Rapid and finish below Coliseum Rapid on river right. The idea behind this Boater-Cross is to have every member of the club cross the finish line before the club can win. Each club is only as fast as it slowest boater so an emphasis will be put on assisting these paddlers down the rapid.

Easier Boater Cross 2:30-3pm – Same event as above but on an easier rapid Dogs Leg to Blacks for those that don’t want to part take in the other Boater-Cross.

Tug of War 3:30-4:30pm – 5 boats from each club will be ganged together clipped bow to stern and then have a tug of war with 5 boats from another club. Winning clubs pass on to the next round.

On Land Events

Boat Toss 4:30-6:30pm – Who can throw a boat the furthest? Person who throws the boat furthest wins for their club. There will be a men’s and women’s competition.

Throw Bag Challenge 6:30-7:30pm – Test your throw bag accuracy skills by trying to get your throw bag in the barrel. Club with the highest percentage of on target first attempts wins.

Z-Drag Pull 7:30-8:30pm – Clubs will be given all the equipment to set up a z-drag. The club must use a z-drag to pull a vehicle approximately 10 to 20 feet from one location to another. The event will be timed and the fastest time will be the winner.

BBQ 5:30-6:30pm: burgers, hotdogs and salad available to registered participants on a first come first served basis until it runs out. Volunteers from clubs to help with the BBQ would be much appreciated.

Cost

The cost of this event is $5 for WO members and $10 for non-WO members. This entry fee covers WO insurance for the day for all on-water events for non-members and the cost of the food at the BBQ. Camping and “Take Out” is not supplied, payment to River Run for these services is required $16.50 per night.

Anyone who is interested please fill up our form and we will keep you in the loop for planning.

CUKC Weekend on the Ottawa River

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 by Events @ CUKC
September 24, 2010toSeptember 26, 2010

Registration for this event is now open.

For those of you who didn’t make it, or those of you that want to try everything on whitewater, here’s your chance: The Carleton University Kayak Club will be holding our 3rd Annual White Water Weekend on September 24, 25, and 26th weekend this year. This weekend is always a blast and fun for all skill levels of paddlers.

Why?

“The main goal of the club is to provide affordable and accessible kayaking to students of Carleton University.”

Where?

Camping Friday and Saturday night at River Run and paddling Saturday and Sunday on the Ottawa River near Beachburg, Ontario.

When?

As a club we will be heading up to the river during the evening on Friday, September 24th, and paddling Saturday and Sunday. We will be returning to the University Sunday evening. Everyone will meet in parking lot 5 (behind the field house and right off Bronson Ave) at 5pm sharp! We will then drive everyone and their boats up to the river campsite and set up our tents before dark.

Who?

Any Carleton Student or other Ontario University are welcome to come whether you’re an advance paddler or a beginner wanting to learn how to paddle. We will be offering beginner lessons from a professional and qualified instructor. The prices for the lessons are $100 for a two day lesson (Sat. + Sun.)

What to bring?

Everyone must bring their own camping supplies and necessary clothing to keep themselves warm throughout the nights. CUKC does have some tents, but if you have your own please bring it.

A Saturday night dinner will be provided which includes hamburgers and pop. We recommend that for lunches everyone just bring some snacks for on the river. Breakfast can be eaten at the local diner which serves a great breakfast for under $10. You are also more than welcome to bring your own food.

Lastly, equipment will be provided to anyone who needs it, for $20 (CU student only), but is in short supply so it will be on a first come first serve basis. Just let us know on the registration form. Also, if you own any kind of wet suit, dry top, or dry suit please bring them for yourself as you will need it.

How to get there?

Every year we car pool up to the river.  Its much cheaper and easier to organize then a bus so please let us know if you are able to drive up to the river.  The club will subsidize your gas up to $30 per car.  If you don’t have a car no worries! The club will match you with a friend who does :)

What’s the Cost?

The cost of this event would be $20 per person and then any lessons ($100) or rentals ($20), and camping fees ($32) would be on top of that price.

How to Register?

To register simply fill out this online form.
