CUKC Executive

Here are your CUKC executives for this year. They are a great bunch of people who are here to serve you, the members, and to help get you out onto the river. All are very approachable and are part of the executive due to their shared passion for the sport, as well as their commitment to help others share that passion. They hope to meet all of your expectations, and should you have any concerns do not hesitate to email any one of them with your questions.

# Years Paddling: 12
Favourite Wave: High Tension
As president it is my responsibility to ensure the club runs efficiently and accomplishes all of its goals. My main responsibility is making sure all the pieces of the puzzle come together, such as updating our website, organising events, or running our pool sessions. This requires picking up all the small administrative tasks such as collecting boats from rental locations, participating in CUSA workshops, or attending budget meetings and storing club-owned equipment. I am also responsible for keeping the club organized by arranging and leading meetings and keeping in communication with all executives and members of the club. The role of President is a lot of work and a huge time commitment but it is definitely worth every second I put towards the club. I am very happy to play such a significant role in the club.

I became part of CUKC because my passion lies with white water kayaking, and when I saw that Carleton had a kayak club I jumped on the boat as soon as possible (no pun intended). My goal is to help continually expand our club and welcome as many new members as possible. We are a fairly new club, and there are still many kinks to work out and improvements to be made. I am eager to involve new people with the sport and push the club to serve its members. This year my main goal has been to have more events outside of the pool sessions and increase the amount of gear owned by the club. This will allow us to take more paddlers to the river for as little cost as possible to the members.

As President I hope to bring a positive influence to the club. My goal is to make CUKC the most exciting club on campus because that is what white water kayaking is all about—‘the rush’!

VP Events – Amy Robichaud

Email: amy@cukc.ca
Major: Communication Studies
# Years Paddling: 2 years
My responsibilities as CUKC’s VP Events are to run the pool sessions and organize all the events that the club puts on for the year and make sure things run smoothly. I make sure that all the pool sessions are scheduled correctly and make sure everyone who signed up gets a spot at the pool session. I am also responsible for taking on any other activities that the club pursues throughout the year, including community events. I started kayaking about two years ago and already love the sport. It is one of the most fun and rewarding sports I’ve ever tried. The Carleton University Kayak Club made it very easy to become involved in the sport with great people instructing and helping you learn.

VP Finance – Isaac Verhoeven

Email: isaac@cukc.ca
Major: Commerce
# Years Paddling: 5
Favourite Wave: Corner Wave
My name is Isaac Verhoeven, and I am the VP of Finance at CUKC. I got involved in the club during my first year and was offered the post at the end of that year. My role in the club is to regulate financial spending for the club (boat/gear purchases and trip spending) as well as attending meetings and ensuring funding from CUSA.

In addition to handling financial disbursments, I am often found instructing and guiding down the river and introducing new paddlers to the sport that I love. During summertime you’ll often find me on the Gull river in Minden where I teach kayaking. I look forward to passing my passion on to you and seeing you on the river.

VP Communication – Kayla Callaghan

Email: kayla@cukc.ca
# Years Paddling: 4 years
Major: Journalism
I am VP Communications at CUKC and it is my responsibility to teach lessons, to write the monthly updates for the CUKC web page, and to communicate with CUSA for advertisement purposes. I’m responsible for promoting the kayak club at Carleton and within Ottawa. I got into kayaking my first year at Carleton through CUKC, (yes I was born and raised at CUKC) and since then have been in love with the sport. I’m still pretty new to whitewater but bailing hard is all part of the fun. Hope to see you all out on the water.

Director of Operations – Alberto Martel

Email: alberto@cukc.ca
Major: Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering
# Years Paddling: 2 years
River I want to Paddle: Petawawa
As the director of Operations of the club, I organize the equipment during pool sessions and help the members find the proper gear. During pool sessions I also teach the Introductory Lesson and shortly Rolling Lesson. Outside pool sessions, I raise awareness and try to recruit new members to the club. I also take part in planning the awesome Fall and Spring trips that we run every year. I joined the club in my First year at Carleton. Since joining, I found that the club has become the best place on campus to relax, have fun and meet new people. The members create a friendly environment making it easy for everyone to become a part of the club.
