What’s up CUKCers

Hope everyone’s summer is going well, and that everyone is getting in some good paddling!

If your currently in the Ottawa Region and would like to go paddling email our community @ trips2010@lists.cukc.ca and will get you boating

As much as everyone hates to hear this, summer is starting to wind down, BUT, that means that the club will be up and running again in full flight!!! So here are four quick updates to let you know what we are up to and to invite everyone to some events.

1) Summer lessons: Summer lessons are still running on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Mooney’s Bay Beach at 6pm. They are $20 per person and will help new paddlers get themselves onto the water and learn basic paddling skills and learn how to roll. If you are interested email events@cukc.ca

2) 7 Sisters Trip: For the first time as a club, we will be running a Seven Sisters trip. If you don’t know what the seven sisters are: well they are a series of 7 waterfalls of varying heights on the Rouge River in Quebec. The trip will be taking place during the weekend of August 21st and 22nd. This trip will be for ADVANCE paddlers only. Unfortunately we cannot take any beginners as the risks associated with the river would be too great. 3) King of the Clubs: The second annual King of the Clubs weekend will be held again at the Ottawa River during the weekend of September 4th and 5th with the competition taking place on the Sunday.This is a really fun event with many other paddling clubs from across Ontario and is for all skill levels. 4) CUKC Fall Trip: Last but not least, CUKC will be holding its annual Fall Trip to the Ottawa River. This is a whole weekend event and will be taking place September 24th, 25th and 26th. Last year we had a great turn out and we are hoping for another great trip. This trip is again for any skill level, we especially encourage beginners, and we will be hosting world class instructors again for all the beginners on the trip. Hey CUKCers,

Summer lessons are going to be run this year by myself and Martin (Martin is the past president of CUKC) and they will be taking place at Mooney’s Bay Beach or at Champlain’s rapids (these are small rapids just out by island parkway bridge).  We will be starting everyone with no experience in Mooney’s Bay and then depending on your comfort level, succeeding lessons would be taking place at Champlain’s rapids.

Lessons will be held either on a 1:1 or a 2:1 learner to instructor ratio, for all ages.  CUKC will provide equipment, including dry tops if you request them.  The lessons will be 1.5 hours and will cost $20 per lesson.  They will be available during the evening on weekdays (usually starting at 6pm) and all day Sundays.

What’s up CUKCers

Another reminder that Spring Trip is April 22, and we have approx 2 kayaking spots, and 4 raft spots remaining for anyone interested. We have successfully booked your favorite world class instructor Billy Harris and Ben Fraser to run the clinics.   We are hoping to bring 10 kayakers and 6 rafters to the river.

Hell or High Water May 1st and 2nd is an amazing event on the Petewawa River (class III and IV). CUKC is signing up at least one raft.  Feel free to send us an email if you’re interested in coming. The cost for rafting is $25 and we will arrange car pooling at a nominal fee. More details coming up.

What’s up CUKCers

Unfortunately we are all done with pool sessions until next fall semester CUKC would like to thank everyone who attended the pool sessions and hopes that everyone had lots of fun this year with our club. For those of you who wish to continue the amazing sport of whitewater kayaking after exams then the following is for you, and for everyone else: have a great summer and hope to see you next year.

The CUKC spring trip will be taking place on Thursday, April 22, 2010 right after exams. Final day is on Friday, April 2nd. That means all of you slackers that have waited to the last minute to register you have to email events@cukc.ca as soon as possible!!! There are still a couple more spots left for kayaking for those that are interested (kayakers must sign up with the instructor) and there are many spots left for rafting.

We’re recruiting for a new exec to join within our core of the few and privileged execs. We are making a final decision on exec for next year this Friday, April 2nd so anyone interested in a position has to attend this meeting!! We will be meeting in the parking lot outside of the pool back door at 11am. After the meeting we will then be heading into the pool to take down all of the kayak racks and to put our fresh executives to work

Lastly, SUMMER LESSONS. This year we have had some big interest in CUKC providing lessons throughout the summer. As a result, CUKC will be setting up lessons throughout the summer for people to further enhance their kayaking skills or to learn how to kayak. If you are interested in summer lessons, then check your emails and the website just after exams (the end of April) and we will be giving you information on how to register. There will also be a form put up onto the website for registration at the end of April. Any questions feel free to email us.

What’s up CUKCers

The next pool session is Saturday, March 27th from 6:30-8:30pm (2 hours) and unfortunately will be the last pool session for the semester.

Registration is now open. Please fill out the online form.

CUKC has a wave on campus many of us took the opportunity to go and check it out and for more stories please check out our blog.

The CUKC spring trip will be taking place on Thursday, April 22, 2010 right after exams. The trip will have white-water rafting and instructed white-water kayaking. Register as soon as you can space is limited.

Please note that since this is our last pool session, we will need everyone who has boats stored at the pool to take them home on Saturday March 27th.
