Spring Trip, Summer Paddling and Gear Sale
Carleton University Kayak Club
May 2nd, 2012
Hey CUKCer’s
Well, another school year has come and past, as well as another CUKC spring trip. The spring trip was a success and really introduced everyone to the fun (and cold) parts of paddling. Check out this year’s blog entry.
This is just an email to let everyone know what is happening now that all the pool sessions are finished. CUKC will be running some summer lessons at Mooney’s Bay to get people to learn their rolls or be introduced to kayaking. To signup for these, just follow the same signup link on the main page of our website.
CUKC will also be running many informal summer trips throughout the summer, and one formal summer trip. All these will be taking place on weekends and will consist of a small group of people heading to a nearby river for the weekend. Again, to get involved with these you can signup on the website once it gets into the summer.
Lastly, another way to get involved in these informal trips and get out paddling for the summer, is to ask us to be added to the "CUKC Summertime Newbies" group on Facebook. This is where we mostly post randomly when some of us will be heading to the river and willing to take a couple of beginners. Just email us at events@cukc.ca to request. Other than that, have a good summer, and we hope to see everyone out paddling.
Please feel free to email us with any questions throughout the summer months.
Love,
Your CUKC Execs
Spring Trip 2012 Wrap-Up
Another Spring Trip has come and gone, but as always, it was a fun filled couple of days! This year we had about 20 people attend the trip, with about 5 people who have never seen rapids before. This year we also had everyone paddle together and the beginners learned from the experienced members of CUKC. We headed up Wednesday evening and paddle Thursday and Friday during the days.
The river was at a very good level of around 12 to run the middle channel for both days. The one take-back was that the water and air were frigid for the duration of the trip. Waking up Friday morning, parts of the gear were frozen solid!! But luckily everyone had dry tops or full dry suits so we were all well prepared for the conditions.
It was tough to get out in the mornings onto the water due to the cold temperature, but once everyone was out the days seemed to go pretty well. We had some good swims and some very happy faces after each rapid.
The nights were great as well: we stayed in a nice cozy rented cottage to keep warm, exchange horror stories of the river and, of course, party all night long!
Another great trip, good memories, and more people who are interested in the sport! For anyone who missed this trip, don’t worry there will be more during the summer. Thank you everyone who help organize the trip and help out during the trip. Pictures will be posted as we receive them, as for now, please enjoy the boatercross we had down Lower NoName on the trip. Spring Trip 2012
Craving some real white-water after all this nice weather? CUKC’s annual Spring Trip is coming up so you can try your skills on the Ottawa River!
We’ll be heading out to the river to set up camp on April 25th – just in time for you to finish up your last exam. The three-day trip will include two nights of camping and two full days of paddling (we’ll be coming home the evening of the 27th). This trip will be smaller than the fall trip because we aren’t offering lessons so make sure your roll is solid in time for the trip! Yay rolling!
For you beginners who were hoping to test out the rapids; if you don’t have confidence in your roll I suggest waiting till the summer trips and Mooney’s Bay sessions. Yay, warm water! As someone who won the golden bootie because of all the bootie beers I’ve earned — I’ll be the first to tell you it’s no fun swimming rapids in the recently thawed spring water and watching your skin turn an unhappy shade of purple…)
On that note, if you want to finish off your school year with some great friends and a splashing good time sign up! We will have gear to rent as per usual.
Registration for the trip opens Monday March 26 after the pool session. Click here to register. Signup quick because registration is CLOSED on Saturday March 31!
The registration for Saturday 24 and Monday 26 pool sessions is now open. If you stil haven’t mastered your roll make sure to sign up so you can get your roll down pat in time for the spring trip!
If anyone would like to pitch in an idea for the spring trip, there is a meeting before Saturday’s pool session starting just after 7pm.
With the end of the school year comes CUKC’s awesome annual spring trip which happens after all exams are finished. More details about the spring trip and sign up for the trip will be coming your way soon. Another exciting event that is also fast approaching is Hell or High Water from the 11-13 of May, so don’t forget to sign up your raft team, kayak or canoe!
That all for now!
